Everything You Need to Know About Diabetes

5. Numbness or tingling in hands or feet

  • Numbness or tingling in hands or feet is a common symptom of diabetes.
  • The numbness can be in one or both hands, or it can be limited to your toes. In some cases, the tingling sensation extends up the arm and into your shoulder area.
  • This numbness may be permanent and won’t go away even when you take insulin correctly for diabetes management purposes (see below).

6. Feeling very tired

  • Feeling very tired is a common symptom of diabetes. Many things, including stress, lack of sleep, and exercise can cause fatigue. It’s not a sign that you have diabetes—it could just be normal fatigue from everyday life.
  • If you’re feeling tired often and it’s interfering with your day-to-day activities (such as going to work or school), talk to your doctor about how much activity would help improve your energy levels.

If you’re having trouble sleeping at night because of low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia), talk to your doctor about whether taking medication before bedtime might help improve this symptom too.
