Diabetes is a group of diseases that affect how the body uses sugar (glucose). The most common form of diabetes is called Type 1, which means that the body does not make insulin or does not use it properly. This type of diabetes develops when the pancreas stops making enough insulin to help regulate blood sugar levels in the body. Some people with diabetes also have high blood glucose levels because they are not able to use insulin properly. In this case, they may need to take tablets to help lower their blood glucose level or inject themselves with insulin several times each day if they cannot eat enough carbohydrates or protein foods like meat.
